Studio v Non Studio Family Portrait

Are you looking to get a portrait taken off your family?. If so, have you thought about where It will be taken?. Most people automatically think about going to their local photography studio. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, though In this blog I will show you that you can get just as good, or even better results much closer to home.

When I am asked by a customer to take a family portrait, I always suggest shooting on location. What this means is working outside or nearby where the customer lives or is located. This could be someone’s home, garden, a local park, beach, loch side or country walk. I like the freedom It gives me as I am not constrained by the confines of a studio. This comes from my background as a press photographer shooting editorial style portraits. When I’m given an assignment to photograph someone, I usually meet them at their home or work. It Is then up to me to use whatever available space there is to be creative and make a high quality images that will published In newspapers, magazine’s or online.

I approach family portraits In exactly the same way, only family portraits are more fun as you don’t have to stick to a particular style for a publication. This gives me lots of freedom to take great images.

The following pictures are from two different portrait shoots. The first was taken In the studio, we originally planned for the shoot to happen outside, but due to some bad weather we decided to use the studio which I had arranged as a backup.

The second shoot was taken In and around the customers home. I was really happy with both and my customers were as well. What It does show is that It is possible to get a great family portrait In your home without going to a studio.

There are hundreds, If not thousands of studio’s all over the country. Some are better than others, but they all give you very similar results. If you get a portrait taken on location you are going to end up with your own unique images that will look completely different to everyone else’s.
