Last month I was asked to photograph a girl and her newborn baby brother and it reminded me why I’m glad I don’t rely on a studio to do my photo shoots. Sometimes when shooting family portraits I will use local parks or any outdoor space I feel will work well. On this shoot all the images were taken within the clients house and garden. I was over the moon with the results and it shows that as long as you are creative, anywhere can make a great location for a portrait shoot.
I started off by taking a portrait of the newborn baby on his own. It was a beautiful day outside so once I had set up I simply used available light from outside. This is my favourite type of light and I new it would illuminate the baby beautifully. During the whole time he was fantastic letting me get the shots that I wanted.
Next I went outside to take pictures of the little girl. The sun was very bright and high in the sky, so I found some shade at the bottom of some stairs and got some great shots. The bright diffused light combined with the brightly coloured clothes of the girl made the pictures look beautiful. My favourite shots are the ones where she is not looking at the camera and just talking to or looking at her parents.
On arrival at the house I noticed a pool table, I thought it might make a great prop for some pictures. Once I was finished outside we went inside and got some shots of her playing on top. She loved this as she is always told to stay away from it and not to touch it.
Lastly I took a portrait of the girl and her baby brother outside as I thought it would be good to get them both together.
