A few months ago I was to take a portrait by a couple with a three week old baby called Ava. On the day the sun was shining outside which meant there was beautiful diffused light coming in through the window. This is all I used for the shots apart from using a reflector to bounce the light back and fill the shadows. I enlisted the mum and dad to hold the reflector which meant it was a real team effort in getting the shots. Ava posing, me taking pics while mum and dad took turns in holding the reflector and moving the baby into position and getting her attention.
I started by taking pictures of Ava on her own.
Next I shot all three together, I love how they are not posing, looking at the camera, but interacting with each other. You really get the impression of how close they are as a family.
Next I spotted how relaxed Ava was on her dads shoulder and got some great shots of her looking at her mum.
On most newborn baby portraits I am just asked to do pictures of the baby but it opens up so many more possibilities when mum and dad are up for getting their pictures taken. As well as getting all three together, I also got pictures of mum and dad individually holding the baby.
By this point Ava was really getting settled so I thought it would be a good opportunity get get some shots of her on her own.
I love this shot of her framing her eye with her fingers.
She got that settled that she fell asleep. This was a great opportunity to get some sleeping baby portraits. As she was older than a week old I wasn’t able to move her into many positions as her muscles had developed to much but nonetheless I got some cute pictures of her sound asleep.
